ABANDONED ITEM FROM NAVCON 2008!!!

It's been a long time and sorry, it hasn't been a priority for us, but this is something that needs to be taken care of.  We still have an item left behind by an attendee or judge at our convention in 2008.  Before this year's con, we sent out emails about it and we also made PA announcements  at the con itself.  No one has come forward to claim it so we're still holding it for it's rightful owner.  If you were at NAVCON 2008 and think you might have left something, please send an email to navconmail@yahoo.com with a description of what it is.

In order to return the item to the correct person, we are asking for this detailed description.  Since it's been over a year, here's a couple hints. It's an ordinary item, not something for a naval game, and it's used for transporting things.  If you reply and your description comes close, we'll get back to you and work out arrangements for returning the item.  Thanks for your assistance.

THE BATTLE OF SICILY CONTINUES

After several delaying mishaps, your NAVCON staff got back together to continue its 1914 naval scenario.  The way we look at it, part of properly staffing a naval wargame convention, is to be naval gamers and play naval games at least once in a while.  When last we left off, as described in a previous posting, the Austrian fleet heading south to go around the southern tip of Sicily, encountered a British force, which closer observation, determined now consisted of a battlecruiser, four armored cruisers, and a couple flotillas of torpedo boats or some other such light annoyances.  After a quick bold approach, this British force fell back to the southeast, having provoked the entire Austrian fleet into pursuing them.  With a slight speed advantage, they gradually lengthened the range.  At the end of an hour, the remainder of the British Mediterranean squadron, consisting of two more battlecruisers, four light cruisers, and two more flotillas of lights, joined them from the southeast.  Strangely, even with this reinforcement, the British continued to fall back, perhaps to draw the Austrians farther away from the French convoys.  The Austrians continue to pursue as best they can, but are having trouble bring their force to bear.  It's going to take a while to stretch out into a firing line and the British aren't cooperating.  There was plenty of long range fire, mostly against the hard-to-hit flotillas, with little result except a lot of smoke on the water and lots of dead fish.  The Austrians did manage to hit and sink one British light cruiser and the British did do some unknown critical damage to an Austrian cruiser.  Good thing both sides have plenty of ammo.  More later.

TOURNAMENT ADDED

In our usual experience, most events don't get added to the schedule until the final weeks before the con.  Of course, everything is subject to change, but we are very pleased at this date to announce the committment we have now received to include an A.R.E.A. sanctioned tournament of the classic Avalon Hill naval boardgame, Victory in the Pacific.  VITP has been a regular gaming event at NAVCON for the past four years but never before has it been presented as a formal tournament.  So if you are a Victory in the Pacific player, start practicing and be at NAVCON this year to square off against the most serious oppenents you are likely to find.  Every game is different.  Check back later for more details.

NAV-CON 2010 A GO AT NEW IMPROVED LOCATION!

Big news!  Your hard-working Nav-con staff has found a much, much better location to hold Nav-Con.  Though Nav-Con has been sucessfully held at the American Legion Hall in South Milwaukee for the past two years, it has used a number of different locations going back to its inception in the nineties.  It has always been open to trying new and better locations, and it will continue to be.    When the opportunity to use this newly remodelled facility presented itself, we couldn't pass it up.  By making the reservation, we have committed to holding Nav-Con for another year, and if all goes well, for more years to come.  We didn't want to change locations unless we found a place that offered substantial improvement to the established Nav-Con experience, and that's what we feel we've found.  Not only is the rental expense in line with our previous locations, but it is easier to get to, offers better parking, and we are really excited by having the extra space.  If we can line up an event judge, or judges to do it, we are looking forward to offering an old-time Fletcher Pratt mother of all naval games fleet action on the high seas Floor.  So if you're a Fletcher Pratt gamer, this is your chance.  We're interested.  Let us know.  There are many other advantages to this new location that are described elsewhere on our website.  Check it out and keep coming back to check out the latest developments for Nav-Con 2010.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM NAVCON!!!
The holidays are over, the snow is being shoveled and your NAVCON staff is getting back to normal life.  As part of that, we got together for the first time in 2010 to continue our naval campaign as described in previous postings.

The shooting has started in the first engagement, the now named Battle of Sicily, between the Austrian fleet proceeding south from Syracuse, and the British Med squadron proceeding north from Malta.  Two British torpedo boat flotillas were close enough on contact to recklessly charge the Austrian fleet.  They were immediately intercepted by almost all the Austrian light forces with guns blazing.  The secondaries of the closest Austrian heavies also joined in.  If anyone can miss at shooting fish in a barrel, it's the Austrians.  And they did.  Not a single hit.  The Austrian light cruiser, Sankt Georg, deliberately sacrificed itself to protect the Austrian heavies by absorbing the British torps.  The Emperor will be proud.  The British heavies, a battlecruiser and four cruisers, used the time to lengthen the range.  Meanwhile the Austrian main body fell into disarray as they tried to get out of their cruising formation to face the enemy without colliding with each other.  A few shots from the bow main guns of the leading  heavies actually hit some of British torpedo boats now withdrawing to cover their main body.  Both sides are forgetting their mission and allowing themselves to get sucked into a general engagement.  Who can best afford it?

More next time.

MERRY XMAS FROM NAVCON!!!

Well, your NAVCON staff has been enjoying XMAS like everyone else and we hope yours was as merry as ours.  As mentioned before, there's not yet a go-ahead decision yet for NAVCON 2010 as we're waiting on some hear-backs which we don't expect until after the first of the year.  Meanwhile, you will have noticed a new addition to the website above about an item abandoned at NAVCON 2008.  We really want to return this item so we will keep making all reasonable efforts until we find the rightful owner.

In other news, your NAVCON staff has started it's new 1914 Mediteranean naval campaign, as described in our previous entry.  We expected a lot cat and mouse searching and strategic movement but just before dawn, three hours after the war officially started, light forces of the Austrian navy, consisting of torpedo boats, destroyers, and a light cruiser, heading south from Syracuse, encountered the British Mediterranean sqaudron heading north from Malta.  The Austrians immediately reversed course and rejoined their main fleet.  The British followed and found the perfect target-rich environment, the entire Austrian fleet.  Silly Austrians.  They think that they actually have a chance against the greatest navy in the world just because they outnumber the British at least four to one and because the German ships Goeben and Breslau are also with them.  Don't they realize that their only purpose  is to provide glorious historical victories for the British?  That's as far as we got so far. We'll continue the description in future entries.  That's it for now.  Thanks for reading.  Carry on!
