ABANDONED ITEM FROM NAVCON 2008!!!

It's been a long time and sorry, it hasn't been a priority for us, but this is something that needs to be taken care of.  We still have an item left behind by an attendee or judge at our convention in 2008.  Before this year's con, we sent out emails about it and we also made PA announcements  at the con itself.  No one has come forward to claim it so we're still holding it for it's rightful owner.  If you were at NAVCON 2008 and think you might have left something, please send an email to navconmail@yahoo.com with a description of what it is.

In order to return the item to the correct person, we are asking for this detailed description.  Since it's been over a year, here's a couple hints. It's an ordinary item, not something for a naval game, and it's used for transporting things.  If you reply and your description comes close, we'll get back to you and work out arrangements for returning the item.  Thanks for your assistance.

PICTURES! PICTURES! WE GOT PICTURES!

As shown above, we finally posted some pictures of the Big Day on this website, thanks to one of our attendees, who kindly shared some of those he took while with us.

The first picture shows Avalanche Press setting up.  It was a big job, needing four long tables to hold all the products brought.  The picture also gives an idea of what the hall looked like, as patriotic as one would expect of an American Legion hall.  By the way, since this is posted on Nov. 11th, let's acknowledge all our vets.  We at NAVCON, are old enough to remember that years ago, Veterans Day was a big deal.  In grade school, we stood for a moment of silence at 11:11, the moment the 1918 armistice took effect.

The next two pictures are from our Ironclads scenario.  It's perhaps a little unfair to feature this since most naval games take place on the open sea and this is a riverine action.  But in our view, the terrain used for this game was so spectacular, that it would be unfair not to post it.

These are the pictures we have posted for now.  They give a bit of an impression of what happened at our CON.  There are some more pictures available which we might post on this site in the future.

That's it for now.  Carry on!

After Action VII

A couple weekends after NAVCON, another wargame convention took place, the venerable Rock Con, at Rockford, IL.  A couple members of the NAVCON staff made it down there and said hi again to a few of the gamers we just saw at NAVCON.  We put out fliers for NAVCON 2010 even though we don't have specific plans just yet.  Also, we were surprised to meet purveyors of Houston Ship models and hard corps naval wargamers, Star Books and Games.  Check them out at:

http://www.greatendeavours.co.uk/ships/country_ships.php?nation_id=100

Houston Ships have a line of 1/1000 scale models of all the major naval classes for the period 1866-1905 and they really look good. The scale is large enough to show a lot of detail.  Lists of these models were available at NAVCON since Star Books and Games couldn't make the trip to a small one-day convention like ours, they being from Lawrenceburg, Indiana.  Indeed, they haven't even been to Rock Con for fifteen years.  They reported making some sales and might be back next year, and also might show up at the major miniatures convention of the area, Little Wars.

We were glad to see some naval game events at Rock Con.  One was "Dawn off the coast of Preveza," a game of galley warfare in the Mediteranean during the Renaissance between the Ottomans and the Pope's "Holy League."  Here's a fascinating, colorful period that rarely gets attention and it's about time someone did something with it.  The models look great and are so different that anyone walking by is compelled to look some more and find out what's going on.  Good job!

Another one was "Tirpitz Breakout" using Naval Thunder rules.  The famous WWII German battleship Tirpitz is coming out of the fjords to attack Allied Arctic convoys.  This was run several times and I was told later that at one of the sessions at least, the game was changed to a hypothetical engagement between Japan and the US in the Pacific, during WWII.  Cruisers got pounded and sunk and battleships were lost to critical hits in the ammo magazines.  It can happen and you gotta love it.

Well that's it for this posting.

After Action VI

For this posting, we want to again acknowledge and thank our longest-term and most loyal supporter, Avalanche Press.  AP has been coming to NAVCON and setting up for four years now and that's pretty reliable.  As mentioned before, this year AP donated games as door prizes, and this added greatly to the NAVCON experience.  Avalanche Press also advertised NAVCON on their own with their own email program.  From talking to some attendees on NAVCON day and from some of the exit feedback forms attendees filled out, we discovered that a good number showed up thanks to emails received from Avalanche Press.  That's not just effort, that's results.  That's what counts in the end.  And if you want results in terms of 20th century naval campaigns, you can't do better than Avalanche's Great War at Sea system.  By now, I think they've covered just about everything, actual and hypothetical, but they're still expanding the line and supporting it.  So check it out.

Carry on!

DESCRIPTION
Late in 1940, the Italian navy had been a fleet in being.  However, after the British struck a crippling blow at Taranto, the Italian Admiralty decided that they were better off taking the fight to the high seas.  Owing to early Italian successes in disrupting reinforcement of Malta, the British began sending larger and more powerful convoys.  Such was the case on November 27, 1940 when a strong British convoy was informed of an Italian force closing on their position.  British Admiral Somerville ordered his escort forces to engage the Italian forces.  Vice Admiral Iachino had orders to avoid combat unless it was heavily in his favour.  Will the Italians judge the odds in their favor and engage the British in a decisive battle?  Or can the British escorts close for battle in either case?
